Off Armageddon Reef David Weber 9780765315007 Books
The first book in Weber's Safehold series, now in an inexpensive Kindle edition. Sets up the backstory which will be referenced throughout later volumes, thus starting with the interstellar human/Gbaba war the original Nimue Alban participated in as a junior officer, and the beginnings of the technologically-stunted society created on Safehold. The main characters introduced in the remainder of the book (what will be the "present day" of the remainder of the series) will almost all be important characters in the later volumes as well (especially "Merlin," Cayleb, and the Group of Four). If you've spotted a later volume in this series in an online ad or a bookstore display, do yourself a favor and read through the series in order; the later volumes will make a lot more sense that way. (And if you eventually tire of the author's seeming attempt to milk the concept of this series for all it's worth, at least you'll have read the best volumes first.) I first read this book years ago, lost track of the eventual umpteen volumes, and now am binge-reading my way through the series afresh (rather like buying a complete season of a TV series on DVD and watching it 1 episode/night over a few weeks, rather than over several months's time when the show was originally broadcast). A great start to a far-future SF series set in a world of limited technology (on a similar level to that of early Modern/pre-Industrial Revolution Earth)!

OK, I confess, I'm a David Weber fan. I bought the book "A Mighty Fortress" only to learn that there were 3 volumes before it and, to date, 3 volumes after it. Being the fan I am, I went ahead and bought the other 6 volumes and dug in. "Off Armageddon Reef" is the first volume in what is now called the Safehold series, and I've just finished it. At first I thought "Oh no, what have I gotten into?" But, stick with it. The first couple of chapters set the stage, but once the stage is set...LOOK OUT! It takes off with a bang! I have very much enjoyed this book and have just yesterday started the sequel "By Schism Rent Asunder" and it's off to a good start. If you like David Weber, if you like science fiction, if you like seeing greedy politicians getting their butts kicked and corrupt church leaders getting their comeuppance, you'll probably love this series like me! Oh, the opening situation is aliens have kicked humanity's butt and we're hidden on a small planet (Safehold) and our society is back to water and sail (pre-steam) and now we have to build our way back...with a little bit of very special help...which I will not give away here!
I first read Off Armageddon Reef long ago as a paperback. I got into the story right off, having no idea where it was going. First it seemed high tech, then we are thrown back to the ... somewhere around the 1790s-1840s, I guess. And on purpose. And for a very good reason! But how to introduce a little bit of tech without getting noticed by the evil aliens ...
Character development is very good and the people in the story are memorable long years after. The back and forth on types of government, different cultures with different values, laws, and ideals, is very good for young people to learn about. Always it is about the content of your character ... always it is about choices we make at those forks in the road. Excellent yarn and highly recommended.
There are subsequent books in this same story line but none of them had the impact on me that this first one did. And some might think they have learned a little too much about sailing around in the ocean but it is all good ... always good to learn about things other than what you might normally seek to learn. Well worth the cost.
David Weber is certainly one of the best authors I know of.
This book is the start of a brand-new series that does not have any sequel problems. While there might be a slight plot overlap with Mutineer's Moon books two and three, I still suggest reading ALL the series. Since these books are published by Macmillan, there is NO DRM! This means that you can actually own the books you buy, and legally read them on other E-Readers.
Plot (Definitely contains spoilers)
A thousand years from now, mankind has been all but wiped out by a genocidal race of aliens. A colony ship has reached a distant planet called Safehold, and mankind is supposed to lay low for a century or two, and then take the fight back to the aliens by developing even better tech than last time. This is made possible by the fact that the aliens are technologically stagnated, and the fact that current tech is almost good enough to beat them. However, the plot takes a left turn when Langhorne wipes everyone's memory and tells them that the command crew are angels, and follows up with a false church and creation story that is designed to prevent technology from becoming more advanced than a dragon-drawn plow.
Fast forward to those thousand years, and the church has grown horribly corrupt. A kingdom called Charis, which is doing well economically and is far too innovative, is earning the stink eye from the current leaders of the church. And unbeknownst to anyone else, a robot with the mind of a woman from before mankind's defeat wakes up in a cave on Safehold, where she is told she must destroy the false church and is given a load of really nice toys to cause havoc. Unfortunately, she is slightly hindered in her use of advanced tech by an ancient KEW platform, used during the civil war that followed Langhorne's takeover, which is still active. She also can't use anything too close to the temple itself, because there's some piece of tech under there that can probably set off the KEW platform if it detects any active electronics or other advanced tech nearby.
She disguises herself as a man named Merlin and sets off to help Charis win the impossible war with the church. Thanks to some spy satellites, new (and historically accurate) old weaponry and sailing technology, and lots of political intrigue, Charis survives and gets ready to overthrow the false church.
