Waiting to Exhale A Waiting to Exhale Novel Terry McMillan 9780451217455 Books Reviews
This book is a classic and probably the grandmother of all chick-lit if you really think about it. I read this as a teen and again ss an adult and the plot, which revolves around these headstrong sisters, still jumped off the pages for me. Too bad Hollywood never adapted this to a series.
I grew up in the 1990s listening to the Waiting to Exhale soundtrack and hearing the buzz about the movie, but surprisingly enough, I'd never seen it or read the novel. So I decided to pick up the novel when I had run out of things to read.
I've got mixed feelings about it. On the one hand, it's always refreshing to read a novel with three-dimensional black female characters as the main characters. This one had four deeply flawed characters, which made them extremely fun to read. You get to care about the characters and you genuinely want to find out what happens to them (especially Bernadette - I wanted her husband to burn!) Each one of them had a real personality and unlike most of the other best-friend-forever novels, they actually got on each other's nerves and did things separately from each other. In fact, I was surprised that this story was not so much a tale of friendship (as the movie makes it seem) as it was about four separate black women who happen to know each other. Honestly, the novel could've been written as a series of vignettes without losing much (except the birthday scene, but that was kind of extraneous anyway). And even though I am in my 20s, it was also refreshing to read a novel that was NOT centered around confused women in their 20s. These women know where they are in their careers; they aren't discovering their identities or anything like that. They want to settle down and begin their lives, so to speak. There are so many discover-your-identity novels aimed at my age group that it was great to read one that was NOT that.
On the other hand, though, I feel like Terry McMillan's writing was kind of bloated. She includes superfluous clauses and sentences describing things that her audience doesn't really care about; seems to insert unrelated events between two related ones; and she talks way too much about mundane things that I'd rather skip but was afraid to because of the fear of missing something important. For one example, Savannah's getting ready montage in the first chapter, I felt, was far too long. Some of Bernadette's scenes describing her in her house were also kind of puzzling, because I expected something to happen and nothing did.
I also feel like the novel lost some steam towards the end. It was chugging along great, and then suddenly things began to happen but without the feeling of resolution you normally feel. Despite the reviews saying that the results were not predictable, I felt like once the requisite male characters appeared during the last third of the novel you pretty much knew what was going to happen.
Will read other books by this author.
Sure am glad I got this book. I've seen the movie so many times, but I never read the book. Of course the book is much different from what's in the movie. But the book gives a more in-depth story on the 4 main characters Savannah, Bernadine, Robin, & Gloria as well as other characters that were mentioned in the movie. Anyway, this really is a good book. So glad I bought it!
I think it's a masterpiece of describing the inner thoughts, intentions, and feelings of the main characters. I didn't read the book completely because it became a little predictable, but still the dialogue was captivating. Beautifully written.
Excellent excellent a must read
I read this book again after 13 years and guess what? I held my breath from the beginning to the end and let it out at the end. It is funny, well written and it is real. Terry has this way of describing life as a single woman with anecdotes that you can relate to no matter your age. I laughed out loud. I scribbled quotable phrases. I whipped out my handkerchief. I enjoyed the book. A wonderful tale of getting to love and finding oneself. It is a must read for every woman who has asked why she is not yet found the right man and for those who have to remind them of what they got.
Great book. I now have all of McMillan's books and love all of them. If any new ones are written, I will buy them, too.
